PhD Supervision: Why the top dog might not be your best bet?

When applying for a PhD, it's tempting to fixate on the glittering profile of the highest-ranked academic. However, there are other crucial often-overlooked aspects that truly shape your doctoral experience.

1) Will They Prioritise You?

In academia, where multiple commitments vie for attention, the first consideration is whether your chosen supervisor can prioritise your project. A top-tier academic may have an impressive track record, but will they allocate the focused attention your research deserves?  It's important to recognise that the more involved they are in committees, teaching, supervision, and projects, the more challenging prioritisation becomes.

2) Accessibility Beyond Credentials:

While it's easy to be swayed by accolades, consider whether your supervisor will be as accessible as their less seasoned counterparts. Can you easily reach them for guidance, discussions, and feedback? In my personal experience, early career academics particularly those who have not supervised many PhD students, often demonstrate a greater willingness to provide accessibility to propel a PhD student toward completion.

3) The Compatibility Conundrum:

Publications and grants don't reveal the nuanced compatibility crucial for a successful supervisior-supervisee relationship. A critical question to ponder is whether the highest-ranked academic aligns with your working style and academic goals. While challenging to gauge, meeting them in person and seeking feedback from those they work with can unveil valuable insights into this compatibility conundrum.

4) The Hunger for Success:

Consider the hunger factor in academia. Does your potential supervisor have the same hunger as an early career academic eager to prove their supervisory prowess? While established academics may have a wealth of experience, the drive to prove oneself and invest time into your academic journey often shines brighter in those at the early stages of their career.

Take home message:

Remember that a PhD supervisor goes beyond credentials. Opt for those who can dedicate time, offer accessibility, align with your goals, and share the hunger for success. While a track record matters, it's just one of many indicators. Choose wisely!
